Learn Spanish

Calling it ‘Spanish’ hides how much the language changes by country. Familiar pronouns differ: tú in Spain and in much of Latin America; vos in the Río de la Plata, and in some other regions. Vocabulary shifts too. In informal Spain, tío is a casual way to address someone; in Mexico that habit is not the same — tío is primarily ‘uncle’. Coger is an ordinary verb ‘to take / pick up’ in Spain and vulgar sexual slang in much of Latin America.

That is variation inside a living language, not a secret ‘real Spanish’ that courses invented against. A careful course still teaches a usable standard. Following Spanish well means noticing which variety you are hearing — Madrid, Buenos Aires, Mexico City — instead of treating one classroom register as universal.

Spoken Spanish also compresses. In informal speech in much of Spain, past participles often drop the ‘d’ (cansado → cansao). That is a Peninsular colloquial habit, not a rule for Latin American Spanish.
