How Dutch lives
Dutch is close enough to English that many learners start fast — then stall when speech gets casual. Everyday Dutch leans on small words that change the tone of a sentence (hoor, toch, even, maar) and on diminutives that are ordinary, not cute extras: een momentje, or een bakkie for a coffee.
There is a real register difference, not a fake second language. ‘Hoe gaat het met u?’ is polite and formal. In informal talk you are more likely to hear ‘Alles goed?’ or something equally short. Both belong to Dutch; they belong to different situations.
A practical obstacle is social, not grammatical: Dutch speakers often switch to English when they hear hesitation — usually to be helpful. Staying in Dutch takes persistence in media, posts and conversation, not only in exercises.
